Dimmuborgir ist ein Labyrinth aus schwarzen Lavasäulen. Entstanden ist dieses Labyrinth als sich vor langer Zeit ein Lavastrom aus dem Krafla Gebiet hierher über den ehemaligen Sumpf ergoss. Die Lava kühlte unten und oben aus und die Hitze der Lava ließ den darunterliegenden Sumpf verdampfen. Der Dampf entwich durch die Lava und ließ die Lava, dort wo er nach oben trat zu Säulen erstarren. Die Lava selbst floss weiter in den See Mývatn und ließ eine Burg mit Lavasälen und einer Decke aus erstarrter Lava zurück. Die Decke ist leider mittlerweile schon eingestürzt. Dimmuborgir ist trotzdem beeindruckend! Dimmuborgir is a labyrinth of black lava columns. It was created naturally when a river of lava from Krafla was flowing over this swamp area. The lava was cooling down on the bottom and top and the swamp below was evaporating. The steam was flowing through the lava creating these columns. The lava itself was flowing into the lake Mývatn and left a castle with lava columns and ceiling. The ceiling broke down but still Dimmuborgir is amazing!
